During the 17th and 18th centuries,
a rather simple dwelling was the residence of the bailiff
of the vast vineyard of the Château de Serrant.
Named Les Vaux, this modest flat-roofed house, with
rough-cast walls, 4 windows and a door on the main (south)
façade, forms the central part of the present château.
We still have the archives of that era.

In 1830, a period of prosperity in the area,
2 Angevin-style stone pavilions were added. They have
2 storeys and high roofs and flank the orignial building
on each side. At the same time, the central door on
the south side, was elaborated with two pillars supporting
a balcony. The old farm buildings next to the château
were enhanced with a brick and stone façade, and were
thus upgraded to become the Château's outbuildings.
Around 1850, the English garden
was redesigned in a Choulot style, covering 5 ha and
including a former arm of the Loire which had been cut
off by the building of the nearby road. This area includes
a vegetable garden which has been maintained with 2
small glass-houses.
As in most gardens of the time
which are to be found in Savennières, a pathway
has been made leading out to the vineyard : here, a
small stone bridge passes over the road.
Based on a pattern of curves and counter-curves,
the design of the park is extremely harmonious and peaceful.
The cast-iron bridge over the Loire arm, as well as
the visible rail tracks reflects the pride of the time
for new technology and the fashion for iron constructions
(it was erected at the same time as the Eiffel tower).
In 1880 a final Haussman-style rectangular pavilion
was added, independant of the main building but linked
by a corridor. This pavilion was designed to house the
large Verdure tapestries in a 70 m2 ballroom which is
used for receptions.
